Diet Tips For Diabetic Patients

Foods you must avoid

  • Sugar, glucose, honey, jaggery, jam, cake, chocolate, ice cream, kheer etc. they provide nothing but calories and carbohydrates.
  • Excessive fat intake is definitely not good. Exclude fried and oily items like vadam, samosa, poori, appalam,biriyani, barota, pickles etc, from your diet totally.
  • Salt is the greatest culprit for diabetics.
  • Try and stop taking red meat completely. Try to go in for a vegetarian diet. If you cannot, decrease the consumption of eggs, fatty mutton, beef, pork, liver, kidney, brain and prawns. Avoid all roots except carrot and radish.
  • Avoid easily digested foods like white bread, maida, rava, semiya, noodles, conjee(porridge) and pongal etc.
  • Avoid high glycemic fruits like banana, mango, grapes, chiku, pineapple, jack fruit and dry fruits.
  • Canned food & highly processed foods must be avoided.
  • Avoid drinking aerated drinks, high sugared health drinks & any kind of fruit juices.
  • Avoid consuming alcohol and stop smoking.

Foods you can eat

  • Food rich in proteins and low in carbohydrates is advisable for diabetic people.
  • Small meals to be taken at regular intervals.
  • Increase fiber intake in the form of raw fruits, vegetables, whole cereals etc.
  • Plenty of oral fluids like butter milk, clear soups etc., should be taken.
  • Bakery products to be replaced by whole cooked cereals.
  • Eat plenty of green leafy salads. Take kidney beans, Dry beans, Peas, Plantain stem, Radish, Cabbage, Ladies finger, Bitter gourd, Drumstick, Cucumber, Cauliflower, Pumpkin, Capsicum, Turnip, Garlic, Onion, Tomatoes.
  • Fruits like apple, papaya, sweet lime and guava can be added in moderation as a small portion now and then.
  • Try to switch to low fat milk and its products like yogurt (curd).
  • Fish, lean chicken and eggs white can be included, two to three times a week.
